Finally finished all the blocks, sashing, etc. for my son & daughter-in-laws’ quilt. Pinned last week and began the slow process of hand quilting. Hope to finish by end of March if I can.
Hi everyone, I decided to post my favorite tetrazzini recipe that I've been making for many years. My husband Phil smoked a organic fresh turkey for us this Christmas and I roasted a organic Chicken from the grocery store too. We had leftovers from both. So, decided to make a casserole and freeze some for later.
I finished my son's Flannel Shirt today and it turned out really well. Making the shirt was time consuming but lots of fun. I purchased the fabric at this link (Fabric.com) and it's Robert Kaufman's Flannel. I used McCall's M6613, View C, with only one pocket since that's what my son requested.

After I washed the shirt yesterday, it actually made the fabric "better". (Before sewing the buttonholes & buttons on today.) It seemed to make it more dense without shrinkage.

I let it hang dry after using the delicate cycle in my front load washing machine.

I also added a tab inside the shirt so can be hung on a hook (you can see in photo 2). Here's the directions if you're interested. You can do this to almost any sewing project that can be hung too.

Just take a scrap of fabric, on the bias and cut it about 1 - ½" wide,

then, fold it over twice, with raw edge showing.

Sew the strip with a tight zig-zag stitch,

Cut to length you would like,

Fold it under on both sides and zig-zag to the collar. (The collar is sturdy enough for this too.)

My son requested wooden buttons and I think they look great.
Wow, how time flies. It's already December!! I've been very busy this year with our house remodels, gardening, sewing, knitting and crocheting. I just finished my daughter-in-law's Christmas present. She picked it out on Pinterest and I purchased the fabric from fabric.com (Robert Kaufman's flannel), crocheted the lace and finished sewing it up today. Here's the blog if you're interested in the directions for making one for yourself or for a Christmas present: http://www.flamingotoes.com/2015/01/15-minute-plaid-lace-infinity-scarf/

I've also made the Esme Tunic for Bethany from the book Everyday Style by Lotta Jansdotter. I purchased the book for myself but very glad that Bethany Loves the tunic!!! It's actually a light denim blue but my photo was taken outdoors and it looks a little light.

A 1974 retro jacket/shirt for my son David, (he found a 1974 Vogue pattern at a thrift store) he also picked out the fabrics. I used snaps instead of buttons, and also used the companion fabric to hem the shirt to give it a more tailored look.
Now I'm making my son a shirt to match the scarf in flannel. I hope to have everything done by the 20th of December so I can take a break or just knit or cross-stitch for myself.

Hope everyone has a wonderful holiday season this year.
This past weekend was very busy here. I mowed our 1+ acres with the John Deere lawn mower, my first time and now I'm a pro at it. Not too sure if this is really something to be a pro at, but it was relaxing when I was not facing the hot sun. I picked up my Asheville Cotton Co. $5 blocks on Saturday and had both done before midnight that evening.
I am also working on the Downton Abbey block of the month (BOM) quilt from Carolina Foam & Fabric Outlet, Black Mountain, NC. Have finished three so far: The purple block is The Dowager: Violet, and the Black, cream & gold block on the right, is The Lady Cora (cups & saucers). Have more to complete for this one.

Last, but not least, my spouse and I went to a Asheville Tourist's game Sunday afternoon and the team was playing my youngest son's favorite AAA team the Charleston RiverDogs. Both teams defense was great so the runs were neck-in-neck at 1/1, 2/2, finally at the bottom of the 9th we had one man on 2nd and the player at bat hit a home run for the final score of 4 -2 ): AAA baseball is so much better to watch and more fun I think than major league baseball, since the players are hoping to get into the major leagues and most are new draft picks right out of college.

Hi fellow crafters:

For the 2016 mystery quilt, I have opted to pay for the extra "expansion block each month for $5. I just finished the June expansion block and here's a photo of all 8 blocks for March - June completed. Tomorrow I will get the July blocks and only pay the $5 for the expansion.

This quilt is a lot of fun & I've finally realized if I don't iron the blocks as I go there is no "stretching" of the pieces. This has bothered me in the past and now I have figured out how to make sure they fit. I would be glad for any quilting comments of how you keep your blocks from stretching too, in the actual sewing processes.

Around the house: I will be painting again today, the shelves for my wire rack appliances. Will be using my husband's favorite color yellow; and doing some laundry today too. I hope to get back to my sewing room later today and fix a zipper for a friend's capris that she can wear at work. She and I have been joking that now with my retirement, I will become her personal tailor....

Hope everyone is having fun today, happy stitching, knitting and sewing...

It's already July here in NC and it's hard to believe that I've been retired for almost 6 months. The house is coming along nicely with about 60% done. There is still lots of finishing to be done. We moved in the house around the end of May, once we bought a new queen mattress set to sleep in. The kitchen was completed enough to use around early June. We've also been lucky that the previous owner of the property planted, roses, lilies and other plants. Here are photos of a few that have been blooming so far.
It's been really hot here since we moved down the mountain and I've needed some cooler shorts. I used the Kwik Sew Pattern 3615, and used quilt fabric, Love More from Susan Black & also have another pair cut out and ready to sew using the quilt fabric Illustrations by www.pbtex.com. The nice thing about this pattern is the pockets are nicely finished and you can't see them. I made the XL if you are interested.
I hope to finish the other pair late this evening or early next week. My to-do-list for the upcoming weeks are to finally get the kitchen set up and all the pots, pans, plasticware put up so the spare bedroom can be emptied as a storage room. I hope everyone has a great weekend!! Happy stitching, knitting and sewing everyone!!

Well, I finally retired from my "paying" jobs after 41 years working. Since I'm too young to get Social Security I will have less money that when working. But, the good part is I've been "stockpiling" as most crafters do. I have plenty of yarn, cross-stitch patterns, needlework patterns, quilting fabric and clothing fabrics.

Phil and I also found a really nice foreclosure that we could afford down the mountain from where we now live. We have been working on fixing it up since the 1st week of March. It is about ½ done with the structural fixes, still waiting on the new roof to be put on and the water to be fixed and running. We will be move there on May 1st no matter what and living in our RV of course. I will finally have a CRAFT room again, and very excited for this. Once we have internet service I will make a point of blogging at least once a week or so. I have so VERY many projects planned. The first few to finish are my son's sweater, it's all knitted except the last sleeve. Then I'll sew it together and send to him in Seattle and see if he can get a photo for me. Second project is my sister's Hitofude sweater in the color way of turquoise and brown. If you're interested, the pattern can be found here on ravelry: Hitofude-cardigan

This is a photo of the view from the porch of our property. I will enjoy stitching, knitting or just having a cup of coffee in the morning watching the trees and listening to the wonderful birds..

I attended my first Primitive Stitching Retreat in Marietta Georgia, this past month and my exchange piece is the Blackbird Design, "BlueBird" stitched with blue silk and I handmade the pattern, and hand-sewed it with fabric from Mary Jo's located in Gastonia, NC. I really love it and although I missed the real primitive look my exchange partner still liked it. If anyone would like a pattern (free), I'll make it and place on my blog in the upcoming weeks. Just comment so I'll know to make the pattern.

We'll it's that time of year again and I'll be off to the 2015 Pal's Stitching at the Beach retreat. If you've never been it's WONDERFUL. The price of the hotel is very reasonable, and the Stitching women are fantastic too. Also Amy from Down Sunshine Lane is great too!!! Can't want to get there with my friends...

I finally sent my retirement date with the VA and it will be January 8th 2015. I'm getting a little scared since it will be more of a change than can be imagined. I've been working since I was 16 (part-time at first) and not really ever had a break for 41 years I guess. My job working in VA Research (administrative support only) is actually get much better, but they say you need to retire before you no longer can contribute to the company you work for :). I'm hoping to begin really posting on my blog again and getting a lot more things finished (lots of cross-stitching, needlework, quilting and of course knitting for family and friends).

I've been going through my quilting, Inspiration magazines, and will sell some on my blog, but for much less than they are worth since I'll just turn around and use the monies for more crafting supplies. I should have the first batch to see around the middle of October, so check back if you're interested.

Hope everyone has a great few weeks!
I'm excited that Ms. Eleanor Parr is here, so now I'll need to find the right fabric and DMC threads. I also have a photo of the hat I finished for a friend to show. I really do love to knit cables, they look so very elegant and are so very easy. I actually used the Lion Brand website (cable) free instructions to learn about four years ago and just couldn't believe how easy they are, and I'd been missing the "fun" for so many years. If you're interested, I do recommend their website as a great way to learn and you may also be surprised how easy they are too.
Dear Stitching and knitting friends:

Well, Phil and I went on a wonderful cruise the 3rd week of January and had a wonderful time.

The next weekend was my youngest son's wedding and of course it was beautiful. I did finish the wedding quilt, with not a minute to spare and tried a new technique too (graphed the actual font in their announcement and then just used machine appliqué to the center of the quilt. I never did take a photo of the finished quilt but here's the photo before the binding.
My current project is a warm throw knitting, using Noro Nadeshiko, which is made up of 40% angora ;to keep me warm next winter while stitching, etc. I've also registered at the hotel in Myrtle Beach for the 2015 PALS Stitching at the Beach, sponsored by Down Sunshine Lane in South Carolina. It will be nice to be there again in October with some of my knitting friends too. Well, it's time to get some rest especially since we lose an hour here in the US tonight. Bless you all out there.

I hope everyone is having a joyous holiday season. I'm enjoying a visit from my son whom lives in Seattle, WA and also my son whom lives in No. Charleston, SC. I have finished two knitted hats and one crocheted hat for a relative to give to her grandchildren for Christmas presents and working on finishing up the sweater for my cousin.

My older son wants a skull cap with Donatello (the Ninja Turtle of course) knitted on it. Thought I'd use a really nice black/navy yarn from my favorite yarn shop http://www.blackmountainyarnshop.com of course. Once I get started, I'll post a photo. I've not been working on the "Bee" stitching project since I also must finish a wedding quilt for my son and his fiancee by the 15th of January. I'm so VERY excited.

This photo of them is at their wedding shower. They each had a erase board and were asked specific questions about each other. His bride-to-be of course won the contest! It was a wonderful shower too; lots of wonderful friends and family were present.

Picked up the Honeybee Hill Sampler Box pattern this afternoon and my progress is below. I've changed up one of the colors for this part since I really like pinks. I'll be using GA Raspberry Parfait for the Copper listed, and using Copper for the Pumpkin Patch. I also will be stitching the other bird using a different shade of blue for a little more color, using Uniform Blue instead of the bird below using Tin Bucket. Also another trick I'm using - if you look at my Queen Bee in the previous post: Instead of using the threads variegated and single, I just use One thread folded and this causes the colors to mix a little differently. Do any of you stitchers out there use this technique too? Just wondering. Sometimes where the variegations are distinct, I'll switch back.

I also belong to a group on www.Ravelry.com called Stash Killers. So I started a new knitting project titled Vonica, by Chick Knits using some stash yarn I've had for a very long time, at least 2 years. Don't have much knitted yet, so I'll post a photo next week. My yarn is 75% merino wool and 25% silk. Its a blue to gray color way. Really nice.

Stash swap: Stitching Question, do any of you have a copy of the Strawberry Garden by Blackbird Designs? I really love it and can't seem to locate at any of the online shops. I have a lot of nice patterns that I would be willing to exchange that I've never stitched. Let me know in a comment and will make a list this week of my stash swap patterns and email you back and also post as a side bar.

Hope you all have a wonderful fall weekend, it's rather chilly here in the mountains around Swannanoa and Asheville, NC.

I just finished stitching the Honeybee Hill pin cushion which is my first "Bee" design completed so far. Now on to the shaker box top design - while watching a little TV with my personal "honeybun" (Phil) and I've posted photo a few photos below. Well, I've knitted two caps for my spouse Phil for hunting the past two weeks and both actually fit him and he likes both. I've used two free patterns I found on revelry.com the first one is a freebie from purlsoho and the other one is free from tincanknits.
the first photo came out light and the second one that Phil is actually wearing is bright orange to protect him from getting shot by another hunter :).
Dear Stitching friends: I was able to work some on the HoneyBee Hill project that I'll be making into a pin cushion once I've finished stitching. I worked on the border above and the bee hive on the right. Will post a photo again this coming Saturday as promised.

My next photo below is actually the purple rayon/linen fabric from Italy. It's the Vogue 3100 DKNY sheath dress with pockets, it actually takes more work than it looks. I can't wait to make it in a black and maybe more colors! The pattern has been discontinued by Vogue but you may still be able to find it somewhere else. If I had purchased the dress retail, my guess it would be around $200 US, thank goodness I love sewing....
Hi everyone, I've been really busy finishing up more projects and knitting a cap for my sister-in-law, and accidentally dropped a stitch so I had to start it over again. I've made the same pattern for my youngest son David and also one for my husband Phil. Once her's is complete I'll post a photo.

I've been buying way too much yarn and fabric again. But I've finished so many projects this year, at least the stash isn't growing too fast. After chatting with my sister Deb at Needles and Words, I realized that I need to catalog all my quilting and clothing fabrics so I know exactly what I have. I looked through it today and realized that a new pattern I purchased would be great for some of the beautiful linens that I have for work. Here's a photos of the pattern (The Trapeze Dress). Since I now knit a lot of scarves it's a great dress to wear them with especially in the winter and fall months when it gets chilly outside :).

I also purchased the pattern from them titled Stitch 56 Alder Shirtdress, and they are having a contest for one more week for this pattern. Check out their website if you're an avid "seamstress" or just like to sew for yourself!

I cut out two dresses and one pair of pants the other night and hope to begin sewing on them all tonight. The dress is a very easy sheath style with a flounce, Vogue 3100 (DKNY), didn't realize it was already out of print since it can be a "girls best friend" as a wonderful BLACK dress, or anything. I'll post a photo when I finish one or both later. Here's the cover photo, or you can still view it on the Vogue pattern website too. As you can see by the photo, it will be really easy and quick to sew up - which I love!!

I have also found my bee stitching which has been in "hiding" since the early parts of January that I'll begin stitching on this upcoming week and posting my first photos on September 15th. Hope you all have a great evening. Hopefully I'll have some new dress photos to post tomorrow evening.

Well, spring and summer have almost passed and I've not posted in a very long time. I have finally finished my sister's quilt after 7 years (procrastination is my middle name). I hand-quilted it and really enjoyed. My sister loves it thank goodness. You can see more photos at her blog www.needlesandwords.blogspot.com. I've also finished lots of knitting projects too. My sister Deb and I've decided to start a "Bee Stitching Party" SAL sometime in September that will be open to all you stitching friends and it's very informal so we can all just post and link to one another's blog. Stay tuned my sister and I will give more details if you're interested this weekend.
We'll, it's about 18 degrees outside but the sun is shining brightly thank goodness, so no "winter sadness" today!

I do have an update, since my last post. I've about finished the pincushion design Honeybee Hill from Blackbird Designs. When I was interested in beading many years ago in the late 90's I collect a lot of bead and should have plenty to use from my stash for finishing when ready.

I also found a wonderful blog thanks to my older sister Deborah at Needles & Words. The blogger finishes her stitching with lovely laces and buttons. Here's a link to her blog if you'd like to pay her a visit: http://elblogdenievesmaria.blogspot.com.

Since I promised a photo of the pincushion for my sister Anna Maria, here it is below. There is a funny story to go with it. My Sister at ohsewsanna.blogspot.com does major sewing for children, quilts and bags. She had small pincushions all around her sewing area and asked for a large pincushion for her Christmas present. I'm fairly creative and had a lot of ideas in my head but since I also procrastinate a lot, all I could think of was a 7" x 5" x 2" "brick type" design in some fabrics she gave me since she really liked. Well, here's the finished photo for you all. I did use craft fleece for the bottom and sides for extra durability but the rest of the filling is walnut shells. She loved it since it will fit just about every pin anywhere...

Don't know if there are fashion sewers out there that are like me the "figure" is not quite what it used to be. I found these two Vogue patterns that will hide many flaws, can't wait to sew them up for work clothing. The blouse pattern on the right would also look nice in some of the newer cool quilt fabrics (since a crisp fabric would be fine) so I'll have to go to my new Favorite online fabric store, Hawthorne threads and look around!!

I've had a very busy 2013, lots of knitting, some stitching and sewing and a few crochet projects. The bad part is my arms and shoulders have suffered. I really need to see a physician about this and really slow down for a while. So far I have a toboggan for my nephew to finish, a throw for my niece, my oldest sister's ongoing quilt (which I am happy to report is actually almost done) and a scarf for my youngest son. I finished a pincushion for my youngest sister that I intend to mail on Monday if the weather permits. I have found a new author for quilting and I've been purchasing her books. I just ordered three more from Amazon that will ship from Japan. Yoko Saito is her name, the books are Scandinavian Quilts and Japanese craft book "Adult bag of a usual envoy by Youko Saito"#0388.

Hopefully this will help, but I'm not sure.

Wow, haven't posted in quite a while. It's been a busy summer, confessing; once my elbow healed I just couldn't help but pick up those "darn" knitting needles....I finished a few things and about done knitting my hoodie for this winter. Just finished a scarf last night with two different Berroco yarns for fun. Also knitting three scarves right now the "Wingspan" and "Claudonia Shawl". I'll post some photos this weekend. I plan to pick up some needlework this weekend as well since I must get a few ornaments completed for Stitching retreat in October. The scarf below is called Madewe.

NC got tons of rain this summer and our garden washed out except the corn; it was very tasty and I made my first batch of homemade creamed corn.

I've also purchased my first iMac which I just LOVE!! I've wanted one for a long time and they offered 18 months of no interest, so......it's very happy too with my iPod that I use too. My spouse joked with me tonight about using both at once, but I am a sort of geek too..he refuses to "learn a new system" though which is sad since it's quite easy oh well....maybe after a few months he'll change his mind.

I've been watching a british TV show Doc Martin which I really love too on a South Carolina Public television SCETV network.

Bought this gorgeous fabric this summer from Hawthorne Threads (online fabric store I also really LOVE) and made a tunic and wear to work, etc. Happy knitting, stitching and sewing everyone!!
Dear Stitching friends:

Here's a photo of my progress so far on Susan Singleton. I'll begin stitching on her again tonight and will post a photo the end of this week on Nicola's Scarlet Letter Year Blog Two.
My sister was visiting with friends at Lake Toxaway, North Carolina and I was able to spend a day with her and also give her this stitching/belated Birthday present (framed). She likes it too, I can now cross it off my 2012 (yes not 2013) to finish (WIP) list!
I've started stitching on my Scarlett Letter sampler choice and and below is the first photo. The colors I've chosen are mostly DMC regular cotton floss, as many of the new DMC variegated threads, Crescent Colors and also a few Gentle Arts Sampler threads too). I may not make the February 2014 goal, since I've started late but really hope to finish as much as I can; and I really love looking at all the other stitchers' work and get tons of inspiration from them too!! If you have some free time, I would suggest going to the Scarlett Letter Challenge link on my blog and clicking on the names to the right of the posts and just enjoy the photos and progress...
I finished my sister's Quaker Alphabet Sampler by La-D-Da this past weekend but won't post a photo until after her birthday since I'd like her to be the first to see it framed. Now that it's finished I picked up a sampler that I think I started over 7 years ago (using my favorite linen Glenshee), the Pineapple Sampler from Hillside Samplings. I didn't realize how quick it would stitch up. The border, alphabet and pulled work section were already done way back then, so I've just completed the first pineapple and the octagon around it; I'm really enjoying stitching it. I love all the designs from Hillside Samplings and have made a few and have a few more to go too...
I bought my pattern when I lived in Minnesota so that's been over 10 years, wow....once I'm done stitching it, if any of you are interested I think I'll have a drawing for this pattern and a few more (before June 1st if I'm finished). Let me know by a comment if you're interested - since I only found a few websites that still sell this pattern [the link is above]. I've also received my sampler from The Scarlet Letter that I'll begin once I receive my linen, for the Scarlet Letter Challenge....
